BEST PRICE
2020 13-inch MacBook Air (UPGRADED)
$1100 ($1000 on sale)
Best Buy • Apple • Amazon
  • Core i5 quad-core 10th-gen processor ($100 UPGRADE)
  • 8 GB RAM (LPDDR4X)
  • 256 GB SSD storage
  • 2x USB-C ports
  • Touch ID (no Touch Bar, only keys)
  • PROS: Somewhat lighter & thinner than MacBook Pros. Available in additional gold color. Some may prefer physical function keys instead of Touch Bar.
  • CONS: Despite its newer 10th-gen Intel processor & newer RAM, the 2020 MacBook Air underperforms both MacBook Pros due the Air's processor being an Intel Y-series (vs. the Pros' more powerful U-series), and due to its thinness constraining its thermal tolerance. In other words, the slightly thicker Pros have more "breathing room" for more powerful processors.
  • CONCLUSION: A perfectly capable Mac for most everyone (assuming you upgrade to the Core i5 processor for an extra $100). But spending an extra $200 is worth the increased performance you'll get from the base model 2020 MacBook Pro, unless you REALLY want the thinnest or gold MacBook.

★ BEST CHOICE ★
2020 13-inch MacBook Pro (BASE MODEL)
$1300 ($1200 on sale)
Best Buy • Apple • Amazon
  • Core i5 quad-core 8th-gen processor
  • 8 GB RAM (LPDDR3)
  • 256 GB SSD storage
  • 2x USB-C ports
  • Touch Bar & Touch ID
  • 8th-Gen Intel U-series CPU (older, but still faster than MacBook Air's Y-series)
  • Better graphics performance than MacBook Air
  • Faster SSD read/write speeds than MacBook Air
  • Brighter, more color-accurate screen than MacBook Air
  • PROS: Best balance of cost vs. power for most people. Outperforms the MacBook Air without the unecessary expense of the upgraded MacBook Pro.
  • CONS: The upgraded MacBook Pro (at $1800 to $2000) has CONSIDERABLE power/speed, feature, and quality increases than the base MacBook Pro.
  • CONCLUSION: This is the MacBook 90% of everyone should buy, unless you're wanting to do high-end video editing with Final Cut Pro (then get the upgraded Pro).

BEST FOR VIDEO EDITING
2020 13-inch MacBook Pro (UPGRADED)
$1800 ($1600 on sale)
Best Buy • Apple • Amazon
  • Core i5 quad-core 10th-gen processor
  • 16 GB RAM (LPDDR4X)
  • 512 GB SSD storage
  • 4x USB-C ports
  • Touch Bar & Touch ID
  • 10th-Gen Intel U-series CPU fastest of all three options
  • Highest graphics performance of all three options
  • Fastest SSD read/write speeds of all three options
  • Brighter, more color-accurate screen than MacBook Air
  • Uprgaded speakers best of all three options (16-inch MacBook Pro is best)
  • PROS: Everything is better: processor, RAM, SSD, screen, speakers, and two additional USB-C ports.
  • CONS: Pricey. Fans can get loud when doing heavy work due to power/thermal demands of the CPU vs. thinness of the design.
  • CONCLUSION: If you're doing higher-end video editing with Final Cut Pro, go for this upgraded version. If you're just doing video editing with iMovie, the base model is perfectly fine.

Printers

Let's face it: ALL printers suck. I can't honestly give any printer recommendation without a list of caveats for that printer, and without the main caveat that at some point, you WILL hate your printer. No one likes their printer—they are, without a doubt, the worst pieces of modern technology. That being said; below are the printers that I have bought, or are similar/newer models to what I have bought for myself of the KW Elite office. I can't guarantee that at some point any of these printers won't fail on you, disconnect, start printing poorly, break, or even catch fire and burn your house down (the latter is least likely). But based on their features and their abilities/quality when they DO work well, they're are GREAT for the reasons I've listed below.

JUST NEED TO PRINT
Brother HL-L2370DW
$80 – $120
Best Buy • Office Depot • Amazon
  • 2-Sided B&W laser printing
  • No scanner/copier/fax
  • Wireless
  • 1-Line B&W display
  • 1x 500-sheet paper tray
  • 1-Sheet multipurpose tray
  • PROS: Great option if all you need to do is print in black & white. Laser printing faster than inkjet. Smallest footprint of all printers listed here.
  • CONS: No scanning or copying, and prints in black & white only. Single-sheet multipurpose tray means manual feeding (but can be used for envelopes). Laser toner & image drum replacement unfamiliar to most users. Lack of touchscreen means wifi setup is more difficult (must be done with wired connection & software).

★ BEST CHOICE ★
Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4740
$250
Best Buy • Office Depot • Amazon
  • 2-Sided color inkjet printing
  • 2-Sided scanner/copier/fax
  • Wireless
  • 4.3" Color touchscreen
  • 2x 500-sheet paper trays
  • No multipurpose tray
  • 50-sheet document feeder
  • Scan PDF to email
  • PROS: Inkjet is most familiar to users. Photo printing is better than laser, but not as good as a photo printer. Lots of good home office features. Dual paper trays is good for keeping both letter and legal size paper loaded at the same time.
  • CONS: Ink can smear if paper gets wet, or dry & permanently clog printer if not used often enough. Slower printing than laser. Lack of multipurpose tray (envelopes need to be loaded into tray). Possibly not as reliable as laser over time.

  • PROS: Laser prints faster & more prints before needing toner replacement than inkjet. Laser prints don't fade or smear when wet. Toner doesn't dry out or clog like inkjet. 50-Sheet multipurpose tray can be used for legal. Possibly more reliable than inkjet over time.
  • CONS: Largest of all printers listed here. Toner cartridges & image drum are larger, more complicated, and more difficult to find recycling. Only one paper tray (but additional tray can be added as an option).
Cheaper Off-Brand Ink & Toner
